Years in service: 6

Occupation: College student, radiology

Austin Congelosi was 16 when he joined Neversink, becoming one of Sullivan County’s many high school students who include firefighting among their extracurriculars. His younger brother Logan would do the same.

“I was following in my dad’s footsteps,” Austin Congelosi says. “The most challenging part was

was balancing school, work, sports and other responsibilities.”

Congelosi recommends the fire service to his peers. It’s a great way to connect with the community, he says, plus “I genuinely enjoy helping others, whether through fundraisers and breakfasts or saving lives.”

The fire service, though, is different from your typical after school clubs and activities, he cautions.

“ Although we like to have fun, there is a lot of stress that comes with the job,” he says. “Always remember that when you join you will have each other to lean on and support through the rough times. Never be afraid to talk to someone.”
