Robert Kachelriess, Captain

Loch Sheldrake Fire Department

Years in service: 23

For Robert Kachelriess, it’s a concern for people, both those he knows and those he’s never met, that has kept him in the fire service for more than two decades.

There’s a certain “satisfaction of helping strangers when others won’t” that he feels as a first responder, and it’s a great feeling, he says.

Thing is, though, no matter how fast you get there, no matter how hard you try, you can’t guarantee a happy ending.

“Not every incident we go to turns out the way we want it to,” he says. “But everyone needs someone willing to show up and give it their all.”
